- Can Academics in Structural Mechanics Survive? - Mechanical Viewpoint and Creativity -
-
Prof. Aoki, Takahira
Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Graduate School of Engineering
University of Tokyo
-
Engineering has a wide variety of research fields. Though the structural mechanics being one of these vast areas of study, it is allotted the fundamental roles to sustain and maintain functions of almost all of the man-made structures. Thorough understanding of 'mechanics' should be the underlying background of structural mechanics. However there seems to be concerns of undervaluing trend of the importance of the mechanics viewpoint. This is partly due to the advances in computational tools or utilization of artificial intelligence, making virtual simulations and assessments readily available. In the presentation, the usefulness of the 'mechanics' way of approach will be focused in, invoking the examples that have been tackled by the presenter mainly in the field of aerospace structures. It will be shown how the approach can contribute to the resolutions of the structural malfunctions or to the creations of the innovative ideas. This presentation will hopefully be of some help to the future development of the structural mechanics.

Initiation and propagation of ductile fractures in crashed automotive components using high strength steels are investigated in order to understand the mechanism of the fracture propagation. In this study, 3-point bending tests are carried out with a hat-shaped part which have a notch and a hole to induce fracture. The experimental results indicate that the location of the hole have influence on direction of fracture propagation. Based on the experimental results, FE simulation is carried out for the 3-point bending deformation. In the numerical calculation, general FEM method and extended finite element method (nonlocal XFEM) are used to investigate the possibilities of the nonlocal XFEM in the crash simulation.

- Study on the identification method for non-linear material properties
-
Mr. Takekoshi, Kunio

-
Identification of thermoplastic material data for CAE simulation requires a lot of time. This is because most of the materials show non-uniform deformation behavior and because it is challenging to precisely predict the non-uniform deformation with CAE simulation. To reduce the identification time, the author proposed a combination of the Bezier curve and optimization program for the identification method of material properties. However, the conversion from a material test result to the Bezier curve was not automated. Thus, the proposed method was not freely used by anyone. In this presentation, a modified method to overcome the above problem will be proposed where a thermoplastic model "DSGZ" is modified, and where DSGZ parameters are initially identified using simplex method and then optimized to fit material test result using CAE simulation.

-
A portable product such as a small printer is required to have a strength that does not break even if the user accidentally drops it. In the case of a drop collision, complex deformation occurs in a very short time. In particular, in the case of a portable product, it is assumed that the product collides with various postures which affect with deformation. For this reason, a design method is required that can predict the falling collision phenomenon and ensure the strength even in the collision posture that is most easily damaged. Therefore, we have utilized a fall strength design guideline into which we have integrated Toshiba Gr‘s know-hows and new ones obtained recently. We also have used numerical analysis to evaluate strength in design stage. In addition, the new functions of JVISON, which efficiently search for fragile collision postures, were developed with JSOL and applied to product development. As a result, we could reduce the number of reversion design.

Crew injury risk prediction method due to the transient dynamic load such as the excessive water landing speed, the explosion overpressure of the launch abort system (LAS) are investigated in this study. An anthropomorphic test device (ATD) model based on the multi-body dynamics is suitable to cover the wide range of conditions. In addition, an human finite element model is employed for more detailed crew injury risk analysis. Detailed research efforts are needed for the crew safety of human space flight since a wider range of the magnitude and the direction of the impact load should be considered. This presentation shows the human injuries evaluation using finite element model. The validity of brain injury criteria BrIC is investigated and new risk curve for BrIC suitable for LAS environment is finally proposed.

- Pedestrian Protection CAE Analysis by Using 4a IMPETUS
-
Mr. Ito, Osamu
Honda R&D Co.,Ltd.
-
In order to reduce casualties in traffic accidents, vehicle safety performance is evaluated by each country's regulation and third party organization, and automobile manufacturers are required to design safe vehicles. Especially in recent years, an increasing number of countries have introduced pedestrian protection tests in order to reduce pedestrian casualties. Since the pedestrian protection test is affected by plastic parts used for exterior parts, CAE prediction accuracy of plastic parts is important for verification of pedestrian protection performance. However, plastic parts have many variations in material properties, and it often takes time to create a material card. Therefore, in this study, 4a IMPETUS was used to shorten the material card creation time and improve the pedestrian protection CAE accuracy.

There is the examination called the drop impact test (also called "the packing freight test"). This examination adds a fall shock to a packed product, and to evaluate the cushioning characteristics of the packaging and the resistance to impact of a product. This examination is carried out using an actual machine. Consequently, that when a problem occurs, often need time for measures, and a development period and cost increase; have a problem. Therefore, with the goal of replacing this drop impact test with simulation, We carry out an action to analysis precision improvement of the drop impact simulation. Because we utilized technique of the quality engineering society this time and came to be able to detect all problems (damage of the part) that occurred in an actual machine examination by simulation, we introduce this case studies.

It is said that traffic accidents will still remain in a future traffic society in which autonomous vehicles and conventional vehicles coexist. In addition, when assuming an autonomous car, it is conceivable that the occupant takes various postures such as comfortable posture. On the other hand, since the current crash dummy can not cope with various postures, analysis using a human body model is expected. In this study, a human body model "THUMS" was applied to investigate occupant kinematics of various occupant postures assuming a frontal collision accident of an autonomously driven vehicle. Usefulness of using THUMS was demonstraited. Furthermore, THUMS update plan was introduced aiming to predict injury of unconventional seating positions in autonomous driving vehicles.

Standing pouches, used for detergent refills, etc., are self-supporting pouches that are excellent for displays at stores, convenient, and resource-saving. A standing pouch has a structure in which two side films and one bottom film are bonded together by heat sealing (heat fusion). If the toughness and heat seal strength of the material are insufficient, bag breakage due to the impact of being dropped will be a real problem. In this study, we conducted a drop simulation of a standing pouch containing liquid using the ALE fluid-structure coupling analysis of LS-DYNA, and investigated the effects of drop conditions and bag structure on drop behavior.

- Efficient pre-simulation method in THUMS application with Odyssee JSOL Corporation
-
JSOL Corporation

THUMS is one of the most precise human model for geometry, mechanical response and human reaction in crash analysis. Corresponding to improvement of simulation accuracy, the model size is getting larger and larger. This means that calculation cost is getting higher as well. In case of sled analysis with THUMS, pre-simulation like positioning and seating is required to get more realistic simulation results. This pre-process makes turnaround time of sled analysis 2 or 3 times larger than using FE dummy model.
Reduced order model (ROM) approach has possibility to reduce this time consuming process by using principal component analysis. ROM is one of the non-linear response function based on some input data as training data set. Unlike usual machined learning approach, ROM has physical meaning and this can require less number of training data sets.

The operating force of the switch mechanism parts consists of composite elements such as springs, gear dampers, and sliding parts, and it is possible to predict the load at the individual element level, but there are issues with analytic precision and calculation cost at the composite. This time, we studied the analytic precision improvement method for these composite models. We will report our efforts to improve accuracy in this lecture.

In engine exhaust parts, many metal gaskets are usually used to seal exhaust gas. And recently, the use environment of metal gasket become more severe as combustion pressure and thermal load increase. However, we mainly evaluate gasket by actual machine tests and can not sufficiently evaluate gasket at the design stage. Therefore, we need to evaluate the gasket sealing performance in advance to reduce development time. We created the gasket model that matches the actual gasket bead shape, waviness shape and laminated structure, and calculated gasket tightening process with the dynamic explicit method, using LS-DYNA. In this report, we introduce their application cases of LS-DYNA and the verification results of the simulation by several examinations.

The first-principles electronic structure calculation method can simulate accurately the electronic states/geometric structures of any materials including semiconductors, metals, and polymers without a parameter fitting to experimental results. This advantage of the method enables us to predict the properties of materials which is not synthesized experimentally so far. With the recent progress of computer technology, this method is widely used in the field of not only the basic science but also the development of new materials. In this presentation, I will give a brief review of the first-principles electronic structure calculation method, and show the recent research result on several materials.

The Wrinkles and sagging caused by aging are typical examples of skin problems, and the development of care methods is demanded. Wrinkles and sagging are considered to be changes in the internal structure of the skin. However the details of the morphological changes and the underlying molecular mechanisms are unclear. Recently, the development of bioimaging technology enables three-dimensional (3D) observation with a resolution of several hundred pm. To understand the details of the changes of the skin with aging, we observed the 3D structure of the elastic fibers in the skin by using this technology, and applied the 3D structural analysis software Simpleware to the images. In this presentation, I will report on application examples and problems of structural analysis to the skin based on above the examples, from the perspective of end users.

Isogeometric Analysis (IGA), a new CAE method, has been attracting attention recently as a solution for higher analysis accuracy, faster calculation time, and better CAD compatibility, which are the issues of conventional FEM. These issues are more pronounced in the analysis of parts manufactured by extrusion process. Therefore, we performed large deformation analyses on an assembly model consisting of multiple extruded parts using the IGA features implemented in LS-DYNA. We also examined the influence of changes in material properties due to heat effect around spot welds and partial strain and plate thickness changes due to a part stamping process, which are important for CAE modeling of automobile bodies. In this talk, we will report on an outline of IGA and its advantages and issues based on the knowledge obtained through these analyses.

This paper describes the development of a simplified modeling method to represent fracture of Self-Piercing Riveted (SPR) joints to be used for large scale crash simulation. First, the cross section geometry of the SPR joint was obtained by a 2D simulation of riveting process. Then a detailed 3D SPR model was generated to analyze the fracture mechanism. A simplified SPR model, with shell elements, was developed based on the fracture mechanism. The simplified SPR model well simulated the stress distribution around the joint. The calculated fracture load and fracture mode showed a good correlation with the experimental results.

The properties of fiber reinforced composites are affected by many factors such as fiber content, fiber orientation, and fiber-resin interface property. Although the fiber-resin interface property plays a great effect on the mechanical property of the composites, there are very few researches taking into account the fiber-resin interface property in CAE simulation. In this report, injection-molded glass fiber reinforced polypropylene was adopted as a composite material, and the modeling was studied using the fiber geometric property and fiber-resin interface property obtained by the experiment. As a result, it was clarified that the yield behavior of the composite material can be expressed by the fiber-resin interfacial strength.
