[Case study] Automobile rear-hatch panel press forming
Asano Co.,Ltd. Case Study
In 2014, with support from the Small and Medium Enterprise Agency, Asano Co.,Ltd. conducted a project called “Development of forming technology for a large thermoplastic CFRP part with complex geometry” to address the difficulties of forming an automobile rear-hatch panel. As a part of the project, Asano Co.,Ltd. used CAE to determine suitable forming conditions. This case study describes the gravity-loaded deformation simulation and press forming simulation accounting for gravity loading.
Gravity-loaded deformation simulation
When a laminated sheet which has been heated by far-infrared equipment is set on a mold, an initial deformation due to gravity (gravity-loaded deformation) occurs.
- Composite: Thermoplastic pre-preg
- Dimension: 1,400 x 800 [mm]
- Lamination structure: [(0/90)]4
Press forming simulation accounting for gravity loading
Taking the gravity-loaded shape as the initial state for the actual press forming, a tensile load was applied in 45° direction by a spring mechanism. As the red line in the image shows, a large draw-in is seen on the right side. This trend is consistent between the simulation and actual forming results.
