Resin impregnation process calculation for fiber structure by VSOP-PS

In the molding of CFRP and CFRTP, voids remaining during resin impregnation can cause strength reduction. In this example, the particle method engine VSOP-PS was used to simulate resin penetration into fiber structures and void formation in 3D. The particle method handles free surfaces well, representing fibers and resin as particles, with pressure applied to allow resin penetration. Changes in void formation due to differences in interfacial tension were also reproduced, demonstrating effectiveness for void evaluation.

  • Capability to analyze the effect of interfacial tension

Process simulation using the particle method

A resin impregnation model composed of fibers and resin particles is shown. Fibers are formed by bonded particles with fixed positions, and resin is pressed in from the x-direction to penetrate between fibers. The 3D model uses periodic boundary conditions in all directions, allowing detailed analysis of resin flow and void formation within fiber structures.

Capability to analyze the influence of interfacial tension

Differences in void formation between fibers when changing the interfacial tension between fibers and resin are shown. In the case of strong interfacial tension (left figure), resin is densely distributed between fibers, resulting in fewer voids. In the case of weak interfacial tension (right figure), voids are more easily formed between fibers. This allows quantitative evaluation of the effect of interfacial properties on impregnation behavior.
